"The pick was mezzo Maya Colwell, whose big, rich sound was gorgeous: she is one to watch."
British-Belgian mezzo-soprano, Maya Colwell has been praised in the press for performances that “delight with her vivacity”. She graduated with Distinction from the Masters course at the Royal Academy of Music, where she was awarded the Amanda von Lob Memorial Prize and the Alice Gamble Award. Maya was a 2020 Young Artist on the Serena Fenwick Programme with the British Youth Opera.
“Maya Colwell's Bradamante was bewildered, the newbie in this complex and puzzling world, but she/he kept their calm and negotiated the waves with great aplomb and a nice musicality. Colwell gave Bradamante a sense of pliability, softness even, without the quasi-male posturing that sometimes goes with the role. And more importantly, when it was her turn in the spotlight she held our attention with subtle musicality.”
